An exceptional and rare example of an antique Burmese Lacquered Screen. Dating to late 19th to early 20th century.
The hinges have long since gone and this is now mounted to display on a wall, and what an impressive wall hanging it is. With a repeating symetrical design inside two teardrop shapes over four panels and featuring lavishly detailed illustrations from Hindu mythology. The whole comes in at 212cm wide by 122cm tall.
The level of detail is breathtaking and the drawing is wonderful; powerful, charming and menacing in equal measure depending where you look. And there is plenty to look at. Three headed, sword wielding gods riding Tigers, beautifully decorated painted elephants, writhing demonic serpents and cavorting figures, all executed in the finest detail.
Most likely made in Bagan, the traditional home for Lacquerware in Burma. There are still several producers in the area. A screen this size today is comissioned in advance and takes over a year to produce, such is the labour intensiveness of the process.
This is a stunning piece but not in mint condition, showing some signs of age and wear. One panel (the furthest right in our images) has had a knock at the top on the black laquer where the screen shows an indentation. There are areas of blooming on the lacquer where (possibly) someone has tried cleaning. This doesn't detract but please study the images before comitting to purchase. There are more images here, including the knock to one panel.
UK shipping is £50, excluding NI and hard to reach parts of the mainland. Please see Shipping info for details and how to order.
