Early 20th Century Chinese Silk Piano Shawl.
An excellent example in superb condition, dating to around 1900. The silk ground is of a heavier quality than is often found, and the whole is a good large size: The field being 128cm sq with an additional 80cm fringe all around.
Profusely embroidered with a symmetrical pattern of Roses and tendrils. Each flower head is made from a complex, subtle palette: reds and oranges, corals and burgundies burst with vibrancy against the most beautiful cerulean blue ground. The fringing is a wonderful sage green silk.
Condition:
Overall excellent with only the slightest signs of age: a couple of very tiny pin holes, one dark mark/stain to one edge, around 6cm in length, another; less noticeable, possibly a water mark, above this to the corner of the same side. A couple of instances of the smallest fraying to the embroidery, you need to look very hard for these, they proved too small for us to photograph. 99.9% of the embroidery is as good as the day it was made. The fringing is immaculate, 100% perfect condition. The field has been carefully ironed and the fringing straightened. The whole piece is exceptionally clean.
