Extraordinary carved and lacquered Japanese planter. 113cm x 60cm x 45cm (44.4 x 24 x 17.7 inches)*. The beautiful, sinuous carving flows; rising and falling in peaks and waves across the creatures back, writhing around and down the length of the stand all the way to the feet. The jet black lacquer and highly unusual form make for a dramatic statement.
The bronze planter (27cm x 22cm, 10.6 x 8.6 inches) is nicely carved, and richly patinated, with cranes and a dragon among clouds. The cranes particularly being very nicely executed. The heavy bronze chains are original to the piece, with the mouth piece retaining traces of the original gilt.
Condition is overall excellent, one small mark to the bronze (around 7mm long by 2mm high) otherwise no loss to the patination and no damages, it is whole and intact. There are small scattered areas (a couple of mm's) of loss to the lacquer, not noticeable overall. Larger areas of localized wear are present where the bronze has rubbed against the lacquer around the legs. We have lightly ebonized the wood here, so the wear blends in nicely with the surrounding area (invisible when the bronze is in place).
