A carved and polychrome low stool, the eight legs formed of carved softwood rabbits painted with spring flowers. The thick hardwood plank seat with carved outer edge, faded blue paint and stylised star motifs encircled by an intricately carved backrest. Indian, possibly Rajasthan, circa 1950’s. 62cm wide x 54cm deep x 49cm high (to the top of the backrest, the seat height is 32cm).

Very decorative, very unusual and extremely charming, this lovely example of Indian folk art is also heavy with symbolism. The rabbits immediately bring to mind images of spring and rebirth and it is possible the stool may be connected to the Hindu festival of Holi (which marks the beginning of spring). The presence of the night sky on the seat above additionally suggests a stellar connection. In Vedic astrology the rabbit serves as the sacred animal totem for two specific birth stars: Anuradha and Jyeshtha.

Condition: Solid and sturdy, the legs are attached to the base with metal brackets and there is no movement anywhere. Various knocks and small losses throughout including a couple of missing rabbit toes. Paintwork heavily patinated throughout. There is a slightly raised split to one of the planks on the seat. Please see all images and video for detailed condition.
