Superb carving and original water gilding with a beautiful aged patina. This early 19th century Giltwood Altar Stick has been carved from a single piece of light wood (with the exception of the lions paw feet).

Probably adapted to a lamp around the 1930's, there is a makers mark and very early sales tickets to the base. The lamp is in excellent original condition with no restoration to the carving, painting or gilding. There are some small areas of loss to the surface gesso (applied over the wood to take the water gilt) and a thin crack to one of the concave polychromed sections on the base. Otherwise superb, solid, clean and stable.

The adjustable shade is parchment covered in gold leaf and compliments the stick perfectly. It shows signs of wear which have added a beautiful warm reddy, purplish tone to parts. It is a really great shade. An odd quirk of manufacture has left the shades gimble slightly off centre, so seen from some angles the shade sits more to one side of the lamp (the shade is very adjustable so this can be generally overcome).

Height including shade is 67cm, the base from Lions paw to Lions paw is 22cm. Rewired to UK standards and in full working order.
