Very elegant Uzbek Suzani wall hanging, dating to late 19th or early 20th century.
Beautifully embroidered silk on a plain cotton ground, this is a wonderful, understated example in excellent condition. The drawing is lovely and uses a complex colour palette of soft greens and blues, lilacs, pinks and browns. It has been constructed over four pieces, then sewed together. This is traditional on these textiles, allowing more than one person to work on them at the same time. This piece has a wonderful asymmetry, particularly striking at the top left and right corners.
Condition overall is excellent, being clean and showing only minor signs of age related wear. Please see images. There are a couple of age spots on the cotton ground, and a few small holes where it has become threadbare. The embroidery is largely intact. The outlines to some of the forms are in places incomplete, otherwise no damage or pulls.
