The largest planter of this type we've seen, at around 42cm wide x 34cm high.
Dating to mid to late 19th century. Cast in bronze with four lobed sections, each with champleve* enamel decoration in the archaic style and ringed taotie handles on a large, heavy, footed base. This is an unusual and very attractive piece. The four feet of the base are slightly convex, meaning the planter doesn't sit 100% flush. This seems to be as cast rather than later damage, and the planter sits solidly and straight.
Showing some signs of age, with small chips to the enamel, some dings to the bronze etc. One of the rings is missing from the handles and the base is now gone, (this is par for the course on large planters of this kind and age, having spent a very long life filled with wet heavy soil). Overall condition is very good, please see images. It is still functional as a planter if you want to use it with a new pot liner, (it's big enough to hold a good sized indoor tree), place a plate at the bottom to carry any size pot plant you can imagine, or just display it in it's own right: it is one of the largest pieces of bronze you are likely to find and extremely decorative on it's own.
UK Mainland shipping is £25 (standard parcel courier so same price applies for all UK mainland). Please contact for International shipping quote*The champleve enamelling process consists of cutting away troughs or cells in the object and filling the depressions with pulverized vitreous enamel. The raised metal lines between the cutout areas form the design outline. Differing from cloisonne where the design is made by laying wire on the surface to make cells to be filled with enamel.
