A superb example of an antique Khotan rug in wonderful condition. Exceptionally soft and lustrous wool quality, with a highly unusual design and colour palette. The quality of the wool in combination with the warm brown pinks of the ground and the deep, full pile give it a feel reminiscent of animal fur. 280cm x 180cm (70.8 x 110.2 inches) Circa 1920.
Because of its location on the silk road, Khotan (East Turkestan, now Xinjiang, China) served as a cultural crossroads, taking artistic influences from China, India, Persia and Turkey. This hybrid style makes Khotan rugs unlike anything else. The three central hooked medallions on this example bear a striking resemblance to those found on Eagle Kazak rugs from the Caucasus, but with a uniquely soft and less defined edge.
Condition:
Exceptional, completely original unrestored condition, with no loss to the pile. Tiny loss of wool on side cord, a few knots pulled loose at one end. Slight shading to the pile.
