Highly decorative and very rare pair of matching Indian Tiger paintings.
 
These are 180cm (70 inch) x 152cm (60 inches) and date to around 1930's, they are from Mewar, India (now Uidapur State). They form part of a tradition going back to the 18th century (to the early 20th) of the Mewar nobility having life size or near life size paintings made of tigers they had hunted. The paintings here form a single portrait of a real animal, seen from the left and right flank. We think it is around life size, maybe a little under, of a female (nose to tail it would be over 2 metres).
 
Condition to both is excellent, with some (possibly water) staining to both, more evident on the right facing tiger, with just small scattered dots of discolouration to the other. Painted in opaque (probably gouache) pigments, the colours are clean, bright and strong, even the whites. They are backed on their original hangings, which have the manufacturers marks stamped to the reverse of the right facing tiger. They have hanging loops to top and bottom, so they may have originally been displayed on some kind of a frame, something that could be walked around, rather than a wall hanging, maybe they once decorated a royal palanquin?
