A large and exceptionally decorative piece of antique English Chintz, 179 x 127.5 cm (70.5 x 50.25 ins). Beautifully drawn in the Chinoiserie style, featuring Golden Pheasants and Woodpeckers perched among Peonies and Almond Blossom. The design is complex and technically accomplished, utilising 16 vibrant and colourful inks to achieve a painterly effect.
In superb, as new condition. The left edge has a selvage, the other three are raw, with a 5.5 x 11 cm notch out of the upper right corner. Cut from a larger bolt, this remnant looks to have been carefully folded and stored in a drawer for the last century. There are no age spots, no sun damage, no marks, dirt or stains.
Given the large scale of the pattern, it may have originally been used for curtains which would display it at its best. This is still a very good useable size but looks incredible just displayed as wall art.
