Highly attractive matching pair in an unusual design.
Made from Elm, it is very rare to see these chairs with the two tier arm rests found here, and even rarer to find painted examples.
Probably made for export, and dating to around 1900, the beautiful blue green/teal finish appears to be original to the piece (the surface is typical of flaking paint having been scraped off to leave the stable paint in place, then lacquered to fix). Both chairs are in excellent, original, unrestored condition. These chairs were constructed by highly skilled craftsmen, using complex systems of joining only, avoiding the use of any glue or nails, there is no evidence of later restoration.
Known in China as Officals Hat chairs and more commonly in the west as Yoke Back chairs (in both cases because of the shape of the top rail), these make amazing Hall, bedroom or side chairs.

To keep costs down, we use multi drop couriers who may only be in your area on a specific day. It is a one man, doorstep delivery.
