Exquisite and extremely unusual carved wood and gesso mirror with original unrestored gilding. Dating to late 18th to early 19th century, we have struggled to find a more attractive mirror.

This superb piece mixes rococo style with Chinese Chippendale flourishes. The Dragon-like Ho Ho Birds dominate, their long tails winding down the frame which then becomes more Italianate than Oriental. The whole is symmetrical in design though asymmetric in the detail. It is a wonderful piece, and we have never seen anything else quite like it.

There is only the smallest loss of gesso to the top surface of the rose at bottom centre otherwise no losses, and a stable vertical crack in the gesso at the top left. The plate has some foxing and light surface scratches commensurate with age.
