A very rare and wonderful find, dating to around the 1940's.
Older Tibetan Tiger rugs are very hard to come by, there are only around 200 known antique examples. These were discovered by western rug manufacturers such as Tufenkian in the late 1980's (following publication of the bookThe Tiger Rugs of Tibet) who then began commissioning the exiled Tibetan weavers (in Nepal) to produce them en-masse.
This is the only Mid Century one we have seen, most likely created in Tibet, and it is a beauty. An exceptional piece of design in superb condition.
The wool is soft and lustrous (though the piece is probably too good to use on the floor, it certainly hasn't been at any point in it's history) and the vegetable dyes are strong and bright. There is some small old moth damage (around the top edge of the blood moon, see images) and light soiling around the Tigers front legs. This is minor and doesn't detract. If you want, we can get this professionally cleaned at cost (around £75).
