Gilbert Houcke made his first engagement at the Cirque d'Hiver-Bouglione where he appeared as "Tarzan" in front of a group of six beasts. He portrayed this character in the film The Tiger of Colombo, which earned him the nickname “French Tarzan”. In France, the press described his approach as "benevolent". In a context where animal abuse was the norm in post-war circus arts, declaring: "Gilbert Houcke was a pioneer; he did not tame, he tamed. He loved his tigers and his tigers loved him. He was famous for the dance of the standing tiger which features on this poster.
