A set of four small faux bamboo side chairs. Carved giltwood with later green velvet upholstered seats. Late Georgian/Regency circa 1820. 82.5cm x 41cm x 35cm (32 x 16 x 13 inches)
A lovely, unusually delicate set of four small side chairs, the carving of the faux bamboo is exceptionally fine. Standing in contrast to the Japanese inspired style of the later Aesthetic movement, these chairs, with their elegantly curving spindles are pure Brighton Pavillion, Regency Chinoiserie.
The gilt is original with very attractive age and wear. The upholstery is later, probably 1950’s/60’s, and the soft green colour matches the gold, and the age of the chairs, perfectly.
Condition: Solid and stable, with no movement to the joints. One chair showing signs of restoration (a small patch of clear glue to the underside of one leg where it joins the seat). The upholstery is faded to two seats and all have small marks/discolouration but are clean and usable. Fraying to the trim. Please see all images and video for full condition.
